EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to the Next Level
by Tomm Carroll

Tomm Carroll

Greetings readers. Welcome to the new phase of Editors Guild Magazine, which is now being published in-house from editorial offices located at the headquarters of the Motion Picture Editors Guild in Hollywood.

I’d like to thank Executive Director Ron Kutak, along with my esteemed advisors on the Editorial Policy Committee–– Patrick Gregston, Rachel Igel, John Gilbert, ACE; Maggie Ostroff and Mark Rathaus––for their faith, support and encouragement, as well as for entrusting me with the editorial reins of this magazine, the Guild’s chief communication tool and its most visible calling card.

Rest assured that I am committed to improving this publication by building upon the foundation that my predecesssors have established. Under my watch, Editors Guild Magazine will continue to grow and evolve, while still featuring comprehensive stories on the art and craft of our membership, revealing interviews with the most influential and respected names in post-production, incisive technical articles on key tools and trends in the industry, informative profiles of the picture and sound editorial staffs of major film releases and hit television series, and the popular Tech Tips section, offering how-to advice on navigating the latest post-production software.

I bring to this position an extensive background in editing, writing for, and overseeing entertainment industry-related periodicals. In the early 1990s I launched DGA Magazine, the official publication of the Directors Guild of America, and, as its editor and publisher, built it into an internationally distributed, bi-monthly film journal with paid advertising. Prior to that, back in the ’80s, I revised and revamped the legendary 20th Century Fox studio newsletter, Focus on Fox, into a magazine-format employee publication covering all of the then-emerging Fox entities. More recently, I’ve been serving as a hands-on editorial consultant for the International Documentary Association (IDA), advising its communications committee and magazine staff on its monthly publication, International Documentary.

In formulating my editorial team of freelance contractors for Editors Guild Magazine, I have been fortunate to engage the services of many of my colleagues from past endeavors, including art director/photographer Wm. Stetz (DGA), still photographer Gregory Schwartz (Fox, DGA), writer Kevin Lewis (DGA, IDA) and book reviewer/writer Ray Zone (IDA). The work of Michael Kunkes, who has written for this publication for the past six months, will continue to appear in these pages, as will the columns and technical articles by such writers/members as Jeff Burman, Ben Bardens, Scott Janush, Ranier Standke and others.

Among the changes you’ll find in this Editors Guild Magazine are three new columns: Op-Edit, an opinion and editorial page (member F. Hudson Miller contributes a commentary about outsourcing Hollywood jobs); Cut/Print, a book review column (Zone offers a gift guide to tomes on editing); and Tail Pop, now a book-closing appreciation by a Guild member of a particularly inspiring film or television program (member David Bruskin extols the virtues of Jerry Lewis’ The Nutty Professor for the inaugural column).

Ultimately, this is the membership’s magazine, so I hope you will let us know how we’re doing. Tell us what you like, what you don’t, what you’ll read, what you won’t. Your comments, criticisms and kudos are always welcome. You can reach me at tcarroll@editorsguild.com. Thanks for reading.
