Honored Guests Inspire Board
At Installation Dinner

Margaret Booth Receives Special Award,
Tom Short Addresses Our Board

Tom Short led the pledge that all in-coming Board members make as new directors of the Guild.
IATSE President Tom Short and General Secretary-Treasurer Michael Proscia joined the Editors Guild Board of Directors at the annual Installation Dinner. Introducing Tom as "our friend," Guild Executive Director Ron Kutak pointed out some of Tom's achievements since he became Inter-national President just a few years ago-merging the camera locals, sorting out jurisdictional problems, creating the Individual Account Plan. Ron said a lot of work and attention will be needed from everyone for a new post production agreement.

After congratulating Miss Booth, Tom Short reminded the Board that the IA is 105 years old. He went on, "I believe...post production is one of the key elements in this very sophisticated industry. It's our bargaining strength at the table." He described the recently concluded negotiations with HBO New York and TNT and announced, "We successfully concluded negotiations this morning with First Entertainment." He thanked Ron Kutak for his help in the bargaining process.

President Donn Cambern gave the traditional plaque to outgoing director John Conte. Other outgoing members of the Board of Directors were not present.

One of the first tasks of the new Board will be to arrange for representation for the new members transferred from local 695.

Margaret Booth was presented with an award by the Editors Guild on the occasion of her 100th birthday, in recognition of "her contribution to the art of film editing." Miss Booth began her career as a neg.cutter in 1915 at D.W. Griffith's lab. She quickly rose to assistant editor at Louis B. Mayer's studios, then editor. She was named Editor in Chief at MGM and oversaw almost every film that came out of MGM from 1937 until the late 60s. She then joined Ray Stark Productions as supervising editor and producer. Miss Booth was nominated for an Academy Award for her work on 1935's 'Mutiny on the Bounty' and in 1977 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Oscar. The legendary "Maggie" loved her work so much she didn't retire until age 88 in 1986.
