Unionizing Across
California
|
Union membership in California rose to
2.08 million during the first 10 months of 1997 (up 21,000
from the 1996 level). The growth is mostly attributed to
organizing victories among low wage and immigrant workers.
However, forty to fifty thousand new members a year are
needed just to keep the unionization rate steady because of
job growth. The percentage of California workers belonging
to unions fell from 16.5 % to 16.3% in 1997.

The formal training program for members
of the Editors Guild is still in a semi-hiatus situation. A
questionnaire is being prepared for distribution to the
membership, including the people coming in from Local 695.
The purpose is to find out what systems the members need to
learn, whether beginning or advanced classes are more
desired, and what special needs the 695 people have.
Funds have not yet been allocated by
Contract Services for the training program, but limited
funds are being provided through the Guild to conduct some
special classes for people who need the training now.
Inquire at the Guild's office: (213) 876-4770.
