Hank Schloss is now working three days a week, exclusively dealing with our training program. He's in Tuesday-Wednesday- Thursday. And, perhaps best of all, we now have a Pro Tools for members to practice on, as well as an Avid and a Lightworks.

1922 Egyptian Renovated By Cinematheque

The American Cinematheque has launched a capital campaign to complete the renovation of the historic Egyptian Theatre at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. Opening festivities will include a showing of Cecil B. DeMille's '
The Ten Commandments' (1923, Paramount) on December 4th - the exact 75th anniversary of the film's original world premiere at the Egyptian. It will be accompanied with a live score.

Once open, the Egyptian will house the year-round programming of the Cinematheque and also be available to select film festivals and premieres. Capital campaign chairman James G. Robinson said, "The American Cine-matheque at the Egyptian will celebrate the past in a grand movie palace while showcasing the future in a state-of-the-art theatre."

Kodak Screen Checks

At ShoWest Kodak announced a screen check program that will help exhibitors enhance the movie-going experience through a combination of training and some improvements in projection equipment.

They've talked to NATO, ITEA and other organizations about screen quality and say there are a lot of factors associated with that, one of which is screen brightness. When you project an image on a motion picture screen it should reflect 16 footlamberts of light, according to the SMPTE standard, and Kodak is working with theaters to identify common problems in achieving that screen brightness, so they can be corrected.

"The newer theaters are great," says Dick Aschman, president of Kodak's Professional Motion Imaging division, "Some of the others have work that needs to be done. Maybe the bulb isn't powerful enough, or there is something wrong with the lens or lamphouse. In some cinemas, the angle of the screen is slightly askew. We are working with cinema managers and their employers to help make improvements that theyy - and we - are identifying."

Frank Warner: Retired But Busy

What do you do after a lengthy and successful career as an Oscar-winning (
Close Encounters of the Third Kind) supervising sound editor? Retired Guild member Frank Warner has been very active in his home town of Sedona, Arizona. He helped organize the fourth Sedona International Film Festival and its featured workshop "The Working Relationship of Film Directors & Editors". The workshop drew 275 attendees who paid from $50 to $100 to enjoy the collective wisdom of Guild editors Walter Murch, Richard Harris, Thelma Schoonmaker, Richard Chew, and John Burnett. Frank said "as a retired filmmaker I am honored to have the opportunity each year to bring together such outstanding people".

The five editors spent the day discussing the pre-production, production, and post-production roles played by the editor and director. Among other discussions, Richard Harris shared stories about the editing of 'Titanic' and Walter Murch discussed his involvement in the restoration of Orson Welles' 'Touch of Evil.' Frank has been active with the festival since its inception and is planning to organize other workshops in the future.

ACE Request For Credits

The American Cinema Editors again urges all active or retired editors who began their editing careers prior to 1975 to assist the ACE Educational Center in its effort to establish a database of television editing credits. It is necessary as a historical reference and urgently needed as a basis for possible consideration for any future recognition or awards.

The ACE needs your TV editing credits up to the present. List separately your episodic series with dates and approximate number of episodes, i.e. 'The Rifleman' 1958-1963 (35), 'Cheers' 1983-1984 (9), etc. With movies of the week, mini-series, specials and documentaries, please try to approximate the year and, if possible, the running time for each show.

If, in addition to TV credits, you also have some feature credits, list them separately.

ACE does not need names of company, studio, producer, or director but they do need any awards or nominations you may have received. If you have already submitted your credits when they were requested a couple of years ago, send in an update with any additional credits since then.

Please send your resumes as soon as possible to:

Bernie Balmuth, ACE Historian
P.O. Box 927
North Hollywood, CA 91603.

ACE is aware that this is a difficult assignment. Just do the best you can - they will be grateful for your help.
