Editor Charges Across America

Charged up with solar-power-generated electricity, Kris Trexler visits the Grand Canyon and notes that there's smog even there.

Guild editor Kris Trexler has won two Emmys, for Happy Birthday Hollywood and Ellen: The Puppy Episode, but he set out in a new direction in May. Kris drove his EV1 electric car on a 3,275 mile cross-country trip. He started out from L.A. on May 12th in an El Nino rainstorm and ended on June 2nd in Troy, Michigan, just outside Detroit.

Using a Mac Powerbook laptop computer and a QuickTake digital camera, Kris kept a daily diary on the Internet using Filemaker Pro. He was not sponsored by General Motors but received a warm welcome at their Troy HQ at the end of his trip. A fleet of EV1s escorted him to the finish line for a party.

Read all the details and see photos of the trip on the web - including Kris recharging the battery everywhere from Fred Flintstone's Bedrock City to a Missouri middle school to a farm.

Kris Trexler arrives in St. Louis on Day 16 of his Charge Across America in his EV1 electric car.
