What's Coming in Version 11?

Media Composer 11 will be released at NAB in April. Avid Principal Product Designer Steve Bayes gave conference attendees a preliminary glimpse of the new features in store for that release. Here’s an overview of some of the features he talked about. Of course, things might change a bit by the time the software is delivered.

  • Motion effect keyframes for changing speed (speed graph) or mapping certain source frames to sequence times (position graph). Offers bézier, spline or linear interpolation between keyframes.

  • Totally new keyframe model with two kinds of keyframes: Elastic (old style), and Fixed (they don’t change if you lengthen the sequence). Separate keyframe for each parameter. Only applies to some effects in V11, but will eventually migrate to all effects.

  • Powerful “Marquee” title tool included. Allows you to do many things that once required After Effects. Since it is a stand-alone application, it can be rendering while you continue working in the Media Composer. Animations exported from Marquee play in the Media Composer in realtime. Available for Media Composer and Symphony on Windows first, but coming to the Mac soon thereafter.

  • Three new and much smoother motion effects: “blended interpolated,” “blended VTR style” and FluidMotion (the last on Symphony only).

  • Photoshop imports with all layers separate. Creates a multilayered sequence from a single Photoshop graphic.

  • “Media Chunking” with Unity storage allows an assistant to be digitizing on one system while the editor is using the same shot for editing.

  • Relink by Keycode no longer needs media online.

  • Automatic selection of pulldown phase for 24P capture.

  • Improved 24P EDLs from 30 fps projects.

  • Timeline triggers for interactive programming such as automatic closed captioning, subtitles, and more.

  • Mac OSX support will appear some time after NAB, probably in the third quarter.
