The Editors Guild Magazine turned four in January. We’ve come a long way, evolving from a small blue-and-white newsletter to a full-color publication that is respected all over the country, reprinted in other journals and used in college courses. And now the time has come for it to change again. Beginning with the May/June issue, a new team will produce and manage the magazine — this issue is our last.

Our goal has been to inform and inspire you, the members of this vibrant community. We wanted to help all Guild members share in each other’s creative achievements, to make sure every member had access to the latest information about our rapidly changing tools, and to help members learn as much as possible about the Guild.

We built the magazine over time, aspiring to make each issue better than the one before. Our unusual approach was to pair a volunteer writer who was an expert in the subject at hand with an editor from our staff, and then to collaboratively develop and polish every article in much the same way that Guild members continually refine their films. We deliberately avoided the kind of trade journalism where stories are really "advertorials" — press releases in disguise. And we tried to speak to all branches of this increasingly diverse organization.

We set out to give the post community and the world at large a new image of the Editors Guild. Thanks to the dedication of ad agency John McCarthy and Associates, advertisers responded, and as a result of their support we produced the magazine for less than half the cost of the newsletter in its last year of publication.

We always conceived of the magazine as a community effort. We could never have done this work without the help of our writers, who gave so generously of their time and expertise. Thanks to all of you, including Michael Amundsen, Corey Bailey, Bart Barisano, Damian Begley, Alan Bell, Phil Benson, Brian Berdan, Craig Berkey, Glenn Berkovitz, Bob Berman, Louis Bertini, Harry Peck Bolles, George Borghi, Robert Brakey, David Bruskin, Tom Bryant, Bonnie Buckner, Michael Buday, Todd Busch, Greg Cameron, Daniel Allan Carlin, Steven B. We’re grateful, too, for the terrific work of our teammates: editor Andrea Van Hook, who created so many valuable articles, photographer Alec Boehm whose practiced eye helped enliven our pages over and over again, printer Sergio Rangel, administrative director Lisa Dosch, proofreader Diane Adler and art coordinator Leslie Kahle. Thanks also to the Academy Award nominees and everyone else who took part in interviews and conversations, and to the many Guild staffers who contributed to these pages.

The magazine began its life when Donn Cambern was president and it could not have grown in the way it did without his support. We offer him our special thanks.

Most important, we are grateful to you, the readers, for letting us become part of your lives during the last four years. Building this publication has been a very exciting process. We offer best wishes to the new team and urge you to contribute your ideas, suggestions and feedback. Only with your support can the magazine continue to grow.
