Training And Practice
News
|
from Hank Schloss
New classes have been added at the
three L.A.-area training facilities. The Moviola Digital
Education Center in Hollywood now offers courses on ProTools
24-track mixing and Adobe After Effects. At Video Symphony
in Burbank there are a new ProTools mixing class, an Editing
Scenarios class and some short refresher courses.
Softimage|DS courses are now available at both Moviola
Digital and Video Symphony. At Montana Edit in Santa Monica,
"Technical Troubleshooting on the Avid Media Composer" is a
new offering.
There has been a great response to the
training program in recent months. As demand increases, it
makes sense to reiterate the procedures for applying to
classes at any of the three facilities:
You must be a member in good standing
of the Editors Guild, and you must be on the Local 700
roster to apply. If you are not yet on the industry roster,
your application for training will not be accepted. If you
don't know whether you are on the roster, call Contract
Services at (818) 995-0900.
Phone the Editors Guild at (323)
876-4770 or come to the Guild office at 7715 Sunset
Boulevard, Suite 200, and ask the receptionist for a
training application. Return it to the guild, attention
Hank. The application will be forwarded to Contract Services
for approval, and then to the training center where your
class will be held. The training center will contact you
when it has an opening for the requested course. At that
time you will be required to send your part of the course
fee, $250.00. Contract Services pays the balance.
It takes about two weeks from the time
you file your application until the time you are called for
a class. We cannot accommodate
rush requests.
After you have taken a class on a
specific system, or if you have prior experience with it,
you are welcome to utilize the practice room at the guild.
Avid, Lightworks and ProTools systems can be booked in
two-hour shifts, and an instructor is available. Call (323)
876-4770, ext. 246 to reserve time.
The toll-free 24-hour
phone number given for the Union Members Discount Network
was incorrect in the January/ February issue. The correct
number is (877) 877-8636.
Charles Jablonski,
NBC Broadcast and Network Engineering vice president, was
named president of the Society of Motion Picture and
Television Engineers (SMPTE).
An exhibit paying
tribute to Cesar Chavez, founder and former president of the
United Farm Workers, will be added to the Labor Hall of Fame
in the U.S. Department of Labor's Washington, D.C.,
headquarters.
Long-time Buena Vista
Visual Effects supervisor Mark Dornfeld has launched Custom
Film Effects (CFE) in Glendale, Calif. The new
post-production company, specializing in high-quality
optical printing for the film industry, will have access to
state-of-the art CGI technology via an affiliation with
motion graphics/special effects and design house Lumeni
Productions.
The Retiree's Luncheon is
scheduled for Sunday, May 16, at the Sportsmen's Lodge in
Studio City. Retirees will soon receive their invitations in
the mail; all others who wish to attend should call Bill
Elias at (323) 956-5632 for details.
