This years Retirees Luncheon was held on May 21 at the Sportsmens Lodge in Studio City. President Donn Cambern spoke about the importance of maintaining a connection to the industry during retirement. He discussed the many opportunities available to retirees to "give something back" in the form of teaching, seminar and panel participation, working to inspire young people new to the business, and involvement in educational programs. Donn is partially retired but is involved in many aspects of the industry and teaches at the Los Angeles Film School. He encouraged retired members to remain active in the business and insisted that although the digital age is upon us, this does not mean that retirees dont have the necessary knowledge or experience to stay close to the editing world.
In acknowledgement of their 60th wedding anniversary, Luncheon Director Bill Elias presented a dozen roses to Ralph and Viola Ives. Ralph Ives is a former Guild President. Bernie Balmuth was recognized for his long-term contributions to the industry as professor of film editing at UCLA and for serving as a delegate on the Hollywood Film and Broadcast Labor Counsel. Bernie recently retired from teaching.
