What were your key creative challenges in making this picture? This year’s Academy Award nominees in Film Editing, Sound and Sound Editing used their skills and creativity to help tell stories of astonishing complexity, set in by-gone eras, imaginary lands and futuristic societies. For the fourth year in a row, the magazine asked all the nominees to describe their work on the movies for which they were honored, focusing on aesthetics, and on what makes the work exciting to them and why. In her letter requesting these essays, Editors Guild President Lisa Churgin asked the nominees to write about the key creative challenges they encountered on these projects. The result, presented on the following pages, offers a uniquely thought-provoking look at the artistry and craft that goes into the best of our work.
All of our contributors overcame long hours and creative
and technical hurdles to create work that their peers
recognized as the most outstanding of the year. The Editors Guild
congratulates all the
nominees and thanks them for sharing their insights and
experiences.
