Training And Practice
News
|
from Hank Schloss
Local training programs keep growing
and improving. The Guild has welcomed a new training site
located in a modern facility in Hollywood. It is franchised
and approved by Avid, so the instructors are all certified.
The name is a familiar one: Moviola Digital Education
Center. Their program offers standard core classes for Avid
and Pro Tools, as well as instruction on film editing and
systems such as Softimage. Patty Montesian is in charge of
the Education Center and Sara Hamilton is her able
assistant. And yes, they do have a very dressed up Moviola
on display. However, the film editing classes are on the
Avid.
Over at Video Symphony, a new class
has been added called "Editing Scenarios from the Trenches."
It is taught by Marilyn Madderon.
A few words of caution: Please be
aware that you must allow 10 days from the time you send in
an application for training until you are called for a
class. You will be called by the facility you select when
there is a class available. We cannot guarantee placement in
less than 10 days.
Our practice facilities remain open at
the Guild for Avid and Pro Tools. The instructors are Dieter
Rozek and Brian Damsky, both highly qualified on either
system.
To book practice time at the Guild,
call (323) 876-4770, ext. 246.

"The Very Essence of
Film"
|
"The quiet concentration and sense of
fulfillment I felt drawing my own movies as a child I can
now find only in the editing room. It's where you deal with
the very essence of film. When you take two pieces of film,
one piece moves and the other piece moves, and when they are
cut together the cut itself creates another kind of movement
- an emotional and psychological movement in the mind's eye
that creates an emotional and psychological reaction, shared
by the filmmaker and the audience. After 25 years, I think
of each film as a new chance, an opportunity to explore new
and different ways of expression."
Martin Scorsese, in
Newsweek
Thousands of Central American workers and their families
have been left homeless, sick and out of work due to the
devastation left by Hurricane Mitch. More than 9,000 people
were killed. In Honduras, about 500,000 were left homeless.
The destruction of fields and factories left thousands of
workers without jobs. Union activists, assisted by the
AFL-CIO's Solidarity Center, are trying to help their
members and their communities. AFL-CIO President John
Sweeney has appealed to union members to send donations of
cash and goods to provide humanitarian aid, including
emergency medical care, food and basic housing to those with
the greatest need. The federation has set up a fund to
accept donations. To contribute, make checks payable to
"Solidarity Center/ Hurricane Relief" and mail to American
Center for International Labor Solidarity, 1925 K Street,
N.W., Suite 300, Washington, D.C. 20006. Attention: Selma
Padron.

from Maggie
Ostroff
On Sunday, September 27, the Editors Guild team
raised over $2,000 at AIDS Walk Los Angeles, the
annual event originating and ending at Paramount
Pictures. Ten of our members participated in the
10k walk to raise money for AIDS Project Los
Angeles and were given special Editors Guild AIDS
Walk T-shirts, generously donated once again by
L.A. Mad Dogs, a loop group run by Mitch Carter. We
greatly appreciate their continuing support.
If you walked and did not
receive a T-shirt, please contact Maggie Ostroff.
Hope to see you out there next year!
