The Sounds of SedonaA group of Oscar-winning post professionals will descend upon the Arizona desert later this winter as teaching faculty at the third annual Sedona International Film Festival and Workshop. Slated for March 5-6, 1999, "Sound Thinking: Sounds for the Motion Picture" is scheduled to feature Gloria Borders, Ken Dufva, David Fein, Gary Gerlich, Gregg Landaker, Carol Littleton, Mark Mangini, Richard Portman and Frank Warner. The workshop will cover the responsibilities of supervising sound editors, sound designers and re-recording mixers in the creation of a motion picture soundtrack. Specific topics include training and entry into the field; current and future technologies; independent vs. studio work; and sound artists' relationships with film editors, directors and producers. The collaborative role of picture editors in the sound process will be discussed by Carol Littleton. In addition, a break-out session will give attendees the opportunity to participate in the creation of Foley effects for a scene from a motion picture. Frank Warner, Oscar-winning sound designer of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and a retired Guild member, is the workshop faculty coordinator. He says, "The workshop's history in our first two years, and our goal for this year, is to bring together professionals with people interested in a good exchange of dialogue in a relaxed and informative environment." The film festival and workshop is presented by the Sedona Cultural Park, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to contributing to the quality of life in northern Arizona through the creation of cultural facilities and presentation of programs in the arts and education. Tuition is $100. Phone (800) 780-ARTS or visit the Sedona Cultural Park website for more info.
