The Creative Arts Emmy Awards

by Sidney
Wolinsky
On August 26th, hundreds of
technical craftspersons, outfitted in formal gowns and
tuxedos, left their cars and SUVs and headed for the open
bars on the patio of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to await
the start of the Creative Arts Emmys. Hosted by the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences, the awards honor creative
technical achievements in television over the preceding
year. Among those to be honored were members of our Guild
working in post-production sound mixing, sound editing,
picture editing and technical direction.
As the attendees settled into their
seats, the producers announced that with awards being handed
out in 53 categories, the ceremony would be a long one.
Winners were cautioned to keep their acceptance speeches
short. The proceedings were broadcast live on the Internet
at iCAST.com, and were taped for later broadcast in a
one-hour format on HBO Plus on September 7 and 9. The many
celebrity presenters included Tom Sellick, Debbie Reynolds,
and Henry Winkler. In the end, the ceremonies lasted
three-and-a-half hours.
After the awards, the winners,
nominees, and guests adjourned to The Governors Ball
to eat. Few participants remained in their seats after the
meal, taking the opportunity to visit with their colleagues
at other tables in the immense hall. A lively band was
playing and the dance floor was crowded.
