Dear Fellow Members, This is the third message - and possibly the last for awhile - that I have written for the magazine. As of the next issue (November/ December), Tomm Carroll (yes, that is Tomm with two “m’s”) joins Editors Guild Magazine as our new full-time editor. He comes to us highly recommended, having transformed DGA (Directors Guild of America) magazine from an in-house newsletter into a professional journal, published bi-monthly, with paid advertising and a circulation of 18,000. We are very excited that he has chosen to join our staff and look forward to a long and fruitful association with our magazine and our organization. In this issue, you will read an article about some of our Guild’s Emmy Award winners, who participated in a TV Roundtable Discussion covering the challenges facing TV picture editors, sound editors and technical directors during the fall 2004 season. You will also read tips about working overseas, utilizing music libraries for our music needs, keeping track of timing for continuities (the bane of an assistant editor’s existence), colorization tips, and much more. I urge you to read Jeff Burman’s article, “Presidential Candidates: A Labor Perspective.” On that point, I urge all of you to get involved in this election by voting on November 2nd. Please urge everyone you know to vote. This year, especially, we need everyone to get out there to register and vote! In my last message, I wrote about the issue of unpaid overtime. In June, we tried to put together a panel comprised of television editors and assistants to discuss this issue. Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to find people willing to go “public” with this most difficult problem. We are still trying to figure out other ways to solve this problem and we need your help. By working together, we hope to figure out a solution to this situation. Sincerely, |
