Remember the Blacklist?

On October 27, 1997, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Hollywood Blacklist.

Judy Chaikin, the producer of what she calls, a 'living documentary', will bring together rare film clips and present members of the Hollywood creative community who were affected by this tragic episode in American History.

Joining A Union Pays Off

"From a pocketbook perspective, workers are absolutely better off joining a union. Economists across the political spectrum agree: Turning a nonunion job into a union job very likely will have a bigger effect on lifetime finances than all the advice employees will ever read about investing their 401(k) plans, buying a home or otherwise making more of what they earn."

New York Times, 8/31/1997

Entertainment Museum Needs Volunteers

The Hollywood Entertainment Museum is the first museum dedicated solely to the preservation, interpretation and exhibition of the entertainment arts. It needs volunteers in visitor services, staff special events, the collections department, administrative support as well as museum docents/guides.

The Museum also needs volunteers in its newly opened editing suite. The editing suite; which is part of the museum's education center, demonstrates to visitors of all ages the ways that films and TV shows are put together, from traditional Moviola equipment to the latest digital electronic system from Lightworks. Volunteers are needed to provide instruction to museum guides, conduct demonstrations, speak to scheduled school groups, and provide educational ideas for integrating into the editing suite's presentation.

For more info. call the Education Dept. at (213) 960-4808.

Post/LA Expo

The post production exhibition and conference, will take place Feb. 27 - March 1, 1998, at the same time as the American Film Market. It will again be held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. More info: (800) 407-4697 or (213) 654-6530.

Wide Screen Film Festival

Dedicated to "saving the 70's", the Third Annual Wide Screen Film Festival opens Friday, October 31st in Long Beach. It's the only film festival in the country aimed at saving 70mm and other wide-format films. The twelve films scheduled span the genres, from 'The Lost Boys' on Halloween to 'Spartacus' to 'Terminator 2.'

The Editors Guild and the A.C.E. are collaborating on an educational seminar to be given during the festival. Guild president Donn Cambern and Laura Young, past managing director of A.C.E., are developing an editing panel to meet with the public on Saturday, November 1st. Clips will be shown to illustrate the unique skills wide screen editing requires. Panel members will be Dan Hanley and Mike Hill for 'Far And Away', Rick Shane for 'Extreme Measures', Ralph Winters for 'Ben Hur', Frank Urioste for 'Cliff Hangers', and Don Ernst for 'Le Mans.'

And what is wide screen without wide screen/surround sound? We will also have several noted sound editors on the panel.

This collaboration between A.C.E. and M.P.E.G. is an opportunity to help the public learn about the unique contribution of the editing process in the making of motion pictures.

The Third Annual Wide Screen Festival will be held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State University, 6200 Atherton Street, Long Beach. (562)985-7000.

Too Many Avids?

Hollywood appears to be saturated with Avids. Encore is no longer brokering Avids it does not own, forcing several Guild members to take on the work of renting out their expensive editing machines themselves.

At Last! Sound & Music Training

Relief is in sight for patient but long suffering sound and music editors. The Editors Guild has made arrangements with Video Symphony for training and practice on Protools and Audiovision sound and music editing systems. Sound and music editors and assistants are eligible if you are on the Industry Roster and are an active member in good standing. If you are suspended, on withdrawal or retired you are not eligible.

Video Symphony will be offering beginning and advanced classes as well as a low cost seminar series on both picture and sound systems.

Fairlight training is also continuing.

In addition, Lightworks is widely expanding its offerings of specialized and advanced classes at low cost on the various new Lightworks systems.

For further information about the classes call Lightworks (213) 465-2002 or Video Symphony (818) 558-1900.

For an application for training, which is subsidized by Contract Services, call the Editors Guild at (213) 876-4770. Also call the Guild to schedule practice sessions on the Avid or Lightworks. Guild member Anil Urmil will be available to help you, if necessary.

This Film Could Be Big

Pam Malouf, Bruce Green, and Bonnie Koehler, now editors, meet up on May 24, 1997, at the 20th anniversary reunion of 'Star Wars' ILM workers on Valjean Avenue in Van Nuys where Industrial Light & Magic had its very humble beginnings. Also spotted in the crowd of about fifty was sound designer Ben Burt who had come from the Bay area for the get-together. Bruce remembers when 'Star Wars' producer Gary Kurtz told him "This film could be as big as 'Planet of the Apes'"

Déja vu?

Lightworks/Tektronix has laid off its Hollywood-based marketing staff, including Keith Lissak who was our linkman. Four people are gone. Keith was laid off just days before the seminars he put together ran at ShowBiz Expo.

Stephen Goldsmith, who was laid off when Avid closed its Hollywood marketing department, has been appointed VP of Encore Nonlinear.

"Own your own historic MGM Moviola!" says the flier from Stephen B. Cohen at Sony Pictures Studios. He's selling them off, reconditioned by J & R Film Company/Moviola. The last of the MGM Moviolas clatters off into the motion picture sunset, to become a "conversation piece" in someone's den.
