ALL THAT EDITING JAZZ
The Manhattan Edit Workshop hosted a lively discussion of the editing
process through the work of award-winning picture editor Alan Heim,
ACE, whose career spans 30 years. Heim screened clips from his
extensive body of work, shared tales from the field and offered valuable
insights into the art of visual storytelling. He also took questions
from the audience, which consisted of many New York-based Guild members.
Aside from his Oscar-, BAFTA- and Eddie Award-winning work on All
That Jazz, he also edited such films as Network, Lenny,
Hair, American History X and The Notebook.
SOUND APPOINTMENTS
Supervising sound editor Michael Geisler and re-recording mixers Jon Taylor
and Christian P. Minkler have joined Universal Studios Sound. Geisler’s
appointment expands the division’s services in animation and gaming,
while the team of Taylor and Minkler will mix features on Mixing Stage 6 on
the Universal lot in Universal City, California.

EDITOR AS ARTIST
Picture editor Katina Zinner is also a painter and her artwork, along
with sculptures created by her mother, Christa, comprise the InsideOut
2007 exhibit at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica, California.
The exhibit, which runs through February 29, 2008, showcases Katina’s
large-format “Flowing Abstracts” oil series, inspired
by her love of the ocean, and Christa’s lifelike bronze nudes
and busts of unique personalities.
“While editing is a collaborative process, in which I put together great moments already captured on film, when I paint, it’s almost the antithesis, where my most personal internal experiences are expressed onto a canvas with no other input but the stare of my pets,” Katina says. KIDS JOIN AIDS WALK
The Editors Guild AIDS Walk team raised over $9,000 and had over 40 walkers
at the 23rd annual LA AIDS Walk on October 21. The star walker again was Stephanie
Lowry, who raised over $3,000 herself. The Walk raised a record $3.9
million.
The kids are, from left (front row), Jaclyn Grubin (Guild member
Lee Grubin’s daughter), Sebastien Dumareille, (second
row) Chanel Mozer, Emmanuel Morales, Daniel Hilarto, Hesiquio
Mendes, Matisse Mozer, Monserrat Vargas, Spencer-Rose Mozer,
(third row) Freddy Martinez and Adam Marangakis. |
In an altruistic move, Tim Mozer’s son Matisse celebrated his 16th birthday that weekend and, as an alternative to a traditional birthday party, he invited his friends to participate and raise money to fight AIDS in lieu of giving him gifts.
The team for the annual event was again organized by Maggie Ostroff, and LA MadDogs returned with their sponsorship of the team by supplying special Editors Guild AIDS Walk T-shirts. Special thanks are due to Mozer for manning the sign-in table, as well as to Christy Richmond and Sue Demskey for all their help.
