FROM RUSSIA, WITH TECHNOLOGY
Last October, I was asked to screen Wendy Apple’s and my documentary
on editing, The Cutting Edge, and teach a master class at Russia’s
Moscow Film School Festival. As part of the trip, I was taken
around to various film studios and television facilities.
At the legendary Mosfilm Studios, I found this Moviola-like device (pictured) on display in the editing department and thought that those who remember the Moviola at would like to see it. Notice the prism system, which throws a larger image off to the side for easier viewing. There were still a few Prevost style tables, which looked like tanks––all levers and gears.
The big surprise, however, was that all the rooms were equipped with the latest Avids (better than the ones on which I’ve done my last two films!), ProTools, new Foley stages and all the bells and whistles of a modern industry.
