Emmy Award-winning sound editor and 61-year Editors Guild member Richard “Dick” LeGrand died on December 29, 2004 at the age of 84 after a lengthy illness. His wife of 51 years, Isabel, and his family were by his side.
Early on, LeGrand worked at Desilu Studios and served as the personal “Laugh Man” for Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball on the I Love Lucy Show. He worked on many television shows, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, Green Hornet, Bonanza and Batman before creating his own company, Sound for Sight, in 1974.
LeGrand won his first Emmy for the television series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, in 1964. His second Emmy was for the movie-of the-week The Amazing Howard Hughes in 1978.
In 1977, he went on to work for RM Productions on primetime shows such as Starsky and Hutch, Dynasty, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Vega$, and Charlie’s Angels, to name a few, until he retired in 1987.
Some of LeGrand’s feature credits include Moscow on the Hudson, The Philadelphia Experiment and Iron Eagle.
He was a consummate storyteller of the “old days” at the studios and entertained folks with anecdotes. Those who knew him will always remember his quick wit and keen knack for one-liners.
LeGrand retired in 1987 in Camarillo Springs, California, where he spent the rest of his days enjoying gardening and his family. He is survived by his wife, three children and seven grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Motion Picture and Television Fund,
22212 Ventura Boulevard, Ste. 300, Woodland Hills, California 91364.
