Guild Retirees Luncheon Celebrates 25 Years

The Editors Guild marked an organizational and personal milestone on Sunday, May 21, the occasion of its 25th West Coast Retirees’ Luncheon at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California. The day was truly a special one for Luncheon Chairman Bill Elias. In 1981, when then Guild President, the late Bea Dennis, asked him to pursue his idea of organizing an event to honor retirees, he could not have known that he was beginning what would become the Guild’s great family tradition.
After delivering the invocation in the Empire Ballroom, Elias surprised the crowd with a 12-minute video slide show, produced by Sharon Smith Holley and Irvin Paik, consisting of 275 photos of luncheons past. Elias then received a surprise of his own, as Smith Holley, on behalf of the board, presented him with a customized, engraved photo album of Retiree Luncheon memories. New retirees were introduced, and retired past Presidents Donn Cambern and Stan Frazen took a bow. So did Bernie and Rosa Balmuth and Ving Hershon, all attendees at the very first event in 1981.
“The retirees themselves are the ones who have made this luncheon
work, and the real ‘thank you’ goes out to them,”
Elias said. “They are the ones who, for 25 years, have filled
this room with friendship, joy, smiles and love.”
