Donald Long Chu, 91, of Arleta, California died August 8, at Panorama City, California at the age of 91. In good health at the time, he was tragically killed by a car while he was walking at a shopping center near his home.
Born on June 22, 1916 in Xinhui, China, Chu was a retired television picture editor and 57-year member of Motion Picture Editors Guild, as well as a former member of Chinatown Optimist Club and San Fernando Valley Chinese Cultural Association. He was a pioneer in the television industry in the 1940s and ‘50s, becoming the first Chinese-American editor member of the Editors Guild.
Chu began his career during World War II, editing war films for the War Department in Washington, DC. He then worked in television studios in New York before moving to Hollywood in 1951. During his long career, he worked on such TV shows as the original Dragnet, Love American Style and Little House on the Prairie, as well as other TV movies and series. Although he retired in 1982, Chu was a proud member of MPEG and still carried his Guild card in his wallet up until his last day.
Funeral services were held on September 8 at Evergreen Baptist Church in Rosemead, California. He is survived by wife Kit-lan Tieng; son Nathan Chu (Eugenia Ordonez) of Santa Monica, California; son Newton (Roberta) Chu of Hilo, Hawaii; daughter Genevieve Chu of Pasadena, California; brother Simon (Patty) Chu of New York; brother Soy (Marcy) Chu of Reston, Virginia; sister Gumping Lee of Pompano Beach, Florida; three grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
