A Night for New Members
In what looks to be a semi-annual event, the Editors Guild held its
first New Member Reception September 27 in its Hollywood offices.
A celebration with hot food and soft drinks to welcome those
who have joined the Guild from the beginning of the year, the reception
drew more than 50 members, as well as Board members and Guild staff.
Speakers for the evening included Guild President Lisa Churgin,
ACE; Executive Director Ron Kutak; National Organizer Tris Carpenter;
and editor Clayton Halsey. Here are photos of some of the attendees.

BIG APPLE’S Top Banana
At press time, Banana Kelly High School in the Bronx was just notified that
it will receive a V-TEA (Carl D. Perkins Vocational & Technical Educational
Act) grant of $33,400 for the purchase of audio-visual equipment to begin
a film program at the school.
The Motion Picture Editors Guild, under the leadership of Assistant Executive Director Paul Moore and Organizer Marc Laub (who wrote the grant application), co-sponsored the proposal for the grant through the New York City Department of Education.
The Banana Kelly Vocational Film Program will teach hands-on motion picture production and post-production through a partnership with the professional union film community, and will prepare students for the varied film industry crafts by providing them with the cognitive, technical and social skills needed to compete for employment in New York’s film industry. Banana Kelly is a small,public high school in a low-income, racially segregated neighborhood with inadequate social services, high unemployment and low-performing schools.
The New York City Council, which formed a Task Force to increase diversity in film production in the city, was extremely pleased that the Guild-guided grant application was accepted. As a condition for the ongoing allocation of $30 million in tax credits for film and TV production in the city, the City Council wants to see an industry workforce that more closely represents the ethnic fabric of New York.

A Frank Donation

This past summer, the Eastern Region Training Program was honored with the generous gift of an Avid Meridien System from editor and Board member Peter C. Frank. His donation expands the training potential for even more members of all classifications to hone and broaden the skills and techniques of our craft. Frank joined the Guild in 1967 and has served on the Board of Directors since January 1999 and on the Board of Local 771 since the mid-1980s. He was nominated for an ACE Eddie in 2005 for Their Eyes Were Watching God. The Guild and its members are deeply grateful for Frank’s continued dedication, generosity and service.
