Assistant Editing Workflows in AVID and Premiere from Dailies to Turnovers

This workshop is open to 10 active members with working knowledge of Avid Media Composer and Adobe creative suite.

This class will also be mostly “LIVE” in that you will physically DO as much as much as possible from the description.

 

1.     Avid

a.     Organizing Your Drive

b.     Creating Your Project

c.     Importing/Linking Media (For offline/online)

                                               i.     AMA Linking/Transcoding

                                              ii.     Importing

d.     Syncing/Grouping Footage

e.     Organizing Bins

f.      Video/Audio Effects

                                               i.     A small dive into the most popular ones AEs use.

g.     Editing a Scene

                                               i.     Everyone is going to get the exact same scene from and old TV show

                                             ii.     I’ll break down how some AEs and Editors look at footage for the first time and using markers

                                            iii.     Then everyone will have an hour so (probably a little longer) to edit it together

                                            iv.     If time permits, we will look at the scenes and talk about them. It’s valuable to see how each person approaches the same scene differently.

h.     Exporting/Turnovers

                                               i.     Video Exports

1.     Which codecs to use for screenings vs internal cuts etc.

                                             ii.     Picture Turnovers

1.     Breaking into Reels/Organizing Tracks

3.     Sending Bins/AAFs/EDLs/Change Lists

a.     We will go over Conform Notes and VFX List Templates

i.      Sending to Premiere

                                               i.     Sending an AAF and opening it in Premiere

2.     Premiere (we will start a little from scratch here instead of opening our AAF immediately)

a.     Organizing Your Drive

                                               i.     Proxy Workflow vs. Straight Importing

d.     Syncing Footage

e.     Organizing Bins

f.      Premiere’s Effect Suite

                                               i.     Small dive into the most useful/common effects

g.     Editing

                                               i.     Some time to play around with the scene again to familiarize with Premiere’s differences from Avid

h.     Bringing in our AAF from Avid

i.      Exporting/Turnovers

                                               i.     Will cover the same ground as in avid but how to do them in Premiere

                                            iii.     Adobe Media Encoder

3.     Resolve (if time permits)

a.     How to open a proxy AAF and relink it to original media

Matthew Buckley is an Assistant Editor who has been working out of NY for the past 2 years. He’s worked on content ranging from narrative features and scripted TV to documentaries.  Buck recently finished assisting on a narrative feature called “Critical Thinking” edited by Jamie Kirkpatrick.
