COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will focus on editing for action and tension, and what connects those to the basic building blocks of visual story telling. We will explore what to look for in the material, and how to make the most of it. And what’s the best way to approach a sequence from the start. We will also address point of view, cutting room dynamics, and having fun.


OUTLINE

Session 1: 10:00 AM

- The importance of knowing the story you’re about to tell.
- Where to start? How to approach a sequence or scene. What to look for…a hint, it’s in the script!
- Be decisive, trust your gut, and why that is so important?
- Editors need to rely on feel, and tempo.
- Don’t be fooled by eye candy, make sure you’re telling the story.
- Discuss how action and tension scenes are are really basic visual storytelling. —— clips—- and discuss. 

Lunch Break: 1:00 PM – 1:25 PM

Session 2: 1:30 PM

- The editor/director relationship, don’t be scared!
- Why point of view is so important to an action/tension scene.
- Clips-questions
- The importance of geography in action editing.
- Don’t forget to have fun. This is a dream job.
- When it’s time to add temp music and sound effects. Their importance, and what to watch out for.
- Watch what you’ve cut as an audience member, with a little time in between…its eye opening.

BIO

Alec Smight, born in New York, NY, is an American television director, producer and editor. He is the son of Jack Smight, the well-known film director. After starting as an actor, Alec transitioned to a career behind the camera as a film editor and was nominated for three

Emmy Awards and three A.C.E. (American Cinema Editors) Awards. After five years in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation editing room, he stepped into the role of director-producer on the series, seeing CSI through to the series completion. He continues to direct and most recently completed Criminal Minds, and MacGyver. Alec Smight is amember of the Directors Guild of America, American Cinema Editors, Motion Picture Editors Guild and SAG- AFTRA.
