SUPPORT THE CA FILM & TV JOB RETENTION AND PROMOTION ACT

The IA California Locals have been working with a large coalition of guilds, unions, producers, small businesses and other associations to promote the enhancement and expansion of California’s production tax incentive program. One component of this Alliance’s efforts is the creation of an online petition to show our legislators the vast amount of public support for the passing of AB 1839, the California Film and Television Job Retention and Promotion Act.

A VAMPIRE FILM WITH A MUSICAL FLOW

Editor Affonso Gonçalves has led a charmed life in New York independent film. Born in Brazil, he studied at the London International Film School for three years before attending the American Film Institute for two and a half years. While in school in London, he did everything from sound to operating camera, with a strong focus on theory. He fell in love with editing, though, and chose it as his focus at AFI.

L.A. Times Editorial Calls for Enhanced Film Incentives
Eight of the nine nominees for this year's best picture Oscar were filmed outside California. Nearly all of the live-action movies nominated in other Academy Awards categories were filmed in other states or countries as well. In the last two years, California -- host of the Oscars, headquarters of the major studios and home of Hollywood itself -- has barely appeared in a big-screen blockbuster.

Auto Workers Union Drops Appeal in VW Vote
The United Automobile Workers union unexpectedly announced Monday that it was dropping its effort to force a new unionization vote at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Bob King, the U.A.W.'s president, said his union was basing its decision on the belief that the National Labor Relations Board’s adjudication process in the dispute “could drag on for months or even years.”

RICHARD SANCHEZ
ASSISTANT EDITOR:
"My biggest challenge has been hopping across different worlds of post. I got my start in reality, but in the past couple of years I've been making more traction in scripted television and in the last year I've expanded into features. Working in reality for several years, I became very comfortable with the process."
