This course is open to 10 active members who are editing and mixing now but have little experience in 5.1 or other surround formats, music mixers transitioning to film or TV, sound editors interested in best practices in preparation for a surround mix, and Picture editors interested in the surround editing and mixing process and how they can best contribute to the various stages of this workflow. The focus will be on mixing feature films, documentaries, and TV series, and shed light on immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This 4 hour course is geared toward those both those in Picture editorial and Sound wanting basic fundamentals and concepts of Surround Sound and Pro Tools.  No prerequisites are required, but an understanding of Pro Tools is helpful.

 

OUTLINE 

  1. Basic surround sound theory including Concepts, Gain Staging, Session Setup & Layout.  Use of Reverbs, Panning and basic automation.

  2. Editing for surround sound.  Planning, Concept and execution of sound editorial. 

  3. Basic Mix concepts

  4. Using Surround Sound as a story telling tool.  When it helps and when it doesn’t.

  5. Dialog, FX, and Foley, how each has it’s place in Immersive formats

  6. Immersive sound- 5.1, 7.1, and Atmos

 

BIO

Sam Miille has been working in sound for film for over a decade.  In that time he’s collaborated on films such as “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk”, “Monster” “Vinyl”, “Silence”,  “Love and Mercy”, ”Life of Pi,” and ”Hugo”.   His documentary experience includes HBO’s “Sinatra – All or Nothing” and episodes of "Independent Lens" and "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom," along with several independent films and short subjects.
