SUPPORT THE CA FILM & TV JOB RETENTION AND PROMOTION ACT

The IA California Locals have been working with a large coalition of guilds, unions, producers, small businesses and other associations to promote the enhancement and expansion of California’s production tax incentive program. One component of this Alliance’s efforts is the creation of an online petition to show our legislators the vast amount of public support for the passing of AB 1839, the California Film and Television Job Retention and Promotion Act.

A VAMPIRE FILM WITH A MUSICAL FLOW

Editor Affonso Gonçalves has led a charmed life in New York independent film. Born in Brazil, he studied at the London International Film School for three years before attending the American Film Institute for two and a half years. While in school in London, he did everything from sound to operating camera, with a strong focus on theory. He fell in love with editing, though, and chose it as his focus at AFI.

Despite the migration of film production from Southern California, the Los Angeles region saw double-digit percentage gains in feature-film production in the first three months of this year. Feature films generated 1,588 production days in the first quarter, a 24% increase over the same period last year, according to figures released Tuesday by FilmL.A. Inc., the nonprofit group that handles film permits for the city and county.

Applications for US Jobless Aid Edge Up to 304,000
The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits last week rose 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 304,000. Jobless claims continue to be near pre-recession levels despite the slight increase. The Labor Department said Thursday that the four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, fell 4,750 to 312,000. That average has fallen from 357,500 applications over the past 12 months. It is the lowest four-week average since October 2007, just two months before the Great Recession started.

RICHARD SANCHEZ
ASSISTANT EDITOR:
"My biggest challenge has been hopping across different worlds of post. I got my start in reality, but in the past couple of years I've been making more traction in scripted television and in the last year I've expanded into features. Working in reality for several years, I became very comfortable with the process."
